Entertainment Expo Hong Kong kicks off today

The Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Donald Tsang, Hong Kong Entertainment Ambassador Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Chairman of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council Peter Woo and internationally-acclaimed director Wong Kar-wai inaugurate the opening of Entertainment Expo Hong Kong 2006, together with industry leaders this evening (March 20).

Leading players in Asia's entertainment industry have converged on Hong Kong for a month of to enjoy Hong Kong's glitziest entertainment.

First organised in 2005, Entertainment Expo brings together key events in Hong Kong's entertainment calendar for film, TV, digital entertainment and music. Together, the Expo's events provide a platform for business deals, screenings, recognition of industry excellence and of course, entertainment.

The Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Donald Tsang, Hong Kong Entertainment Ambassador Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Chairman of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council Peter Woo and internationally-acclaimed director Wong Kar-wai will inaugurate the mega event together with industry leaders at a gala event this evening (March 20).

Celebrating also the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong Film Awards, the gala is again a star-studded event, with more than 1,500 film and entertainment industry leaders invited, including super stars Jackie Chan, Maggie Cheung, Tony Leung Ka-fai, Jacky Cheung, Leo Ku, Jeff Cheung, Joey Yung and famous Japanese actor Yosuke Eguchi (江口洋介).

Winners of best actor, best actress, best director, and best scriptwriter of the Hong Kong Film Awards over the past 25 years marked the occasion by participating in an historical photograph to celebrate the anniversary.

Heroes behind the camera such as Johnnie To, Peter Chan, Stanley Tong, Peter Kam, Tim Yip, Fruit Chan and Stanley Kwan attended tonight's event.

Entertainment Expo 2006 celebrates significant anniversaries for three of its founding events. In addition to the Film Awards, 25th anniversary, it is FILMART's 10th and the Hong Kong International Film Festival's 30th.

The other five core events of Entertainment Expo Hong Kong are Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF); Hong Kong Digital Entertainment Excellence Awards (HKDEEA), the Digital Entertainment Leadership Forum (DELF), the IFPI Hong Kong Top Sales Music Award and the Hong Kong Independent Short Film & Video Awards (ifva).

Jointly presented by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (TDC) and organisers of entertainment-related events, the four-week Expo showcases the excellence of Hong Kong's entertainment sector and helps to propel the growth of creative industries here.

Running from March 20th to April 19th, the first two weeks focus on commercial programmes, while the second two weeks concentrate on activities for the public.

Some 4,000 filmmakers and film-buyers are expected to participate in FILMART, TDC's business-to-business platform for the industry.

TDC Chairman Peter Woo is optimistic about emerging opportunities in the Hong Kong and Asian entertainment industries. "The further opening of the growing China market and other markets in Asia has presented industry players with great opportunities. They were dreams before, now they are no longer just dreams. Hong Kong is always in the right place, at the right time," said Mr. Woo.*****
