US Still Looking Good for Hong Kong Exports: HKTDC Director
Latin American Market Appears Particularly Attractive

6 July 2010 – Hong Kong exporters can still find opportunities in the United States, despite the country’s continuing struggles in the wake of the global downturn, according to Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) Regional Director of the Americas Louis Ho.

Mr Ho was interviewed by the HKTDC’s webcasting service while attending a June meeting of the HKTDC’s global directors and consultants in Hong Kong. For the full interview, please visit: http://www.youtube.com/hktdc

“In New York, we are seeing a lot of spending in high-end merchandise,” said Mr Ho. “However, moving across the country, we see less-affluent areas impacted more by the recession. There, the home essentials – the basics – are doing well,” he said, adding that Hong Kong will also do well, “as long as we are able to provide value-for-money merchandise.”

US buyers are returning to Hong Kong trade fairs, particularly for electronic goods, he said, citing the example of JVC, which is seeking to import large quantities of 3D eyewear.

Mr Ho, who oversees the HKTDC’s North American and Latin American markets, was even more positive about opportunities south of the US border.

“For Latin America, we are particularly upbeat. Our trade programmes there will be very active this year,” he said, adding that the HKTDC’s plans included “a full range of promotional projects, from Mexico to Chile.”
