“Think Global, Think Hong Kong” Set for Japan in May
Huge Hong Kong Promotion to Target Tokyo, Osaka

12 April 2012 “Think Global, Think Hong Kong” (TGTHK), the largest promotional campaign ever launched in Japan by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), opens next month in Tokyo and Osaka. The week-long programme, 13-19 May, will highlight how Hong Kong can help Japanese companies build new business opportunities in Asia, particularly on the Chinese mainland. 

The promotion is expected to attract more than 2,000 Japanese corporate leaders, government officials, heads of small and medium-sized enterprises, services providers, academics and opinion leaders with a special interest in Asia. 

Tokyo and Osaka Symposiums
Two major symposiums – in Tokyo, 15 May, and Osaka, 17 May – will showcase Hong Kong’s role as Asia’s services centre and gateway to China business opportunities.

Donald Tsang, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR Government, and Tadashi Okamura, Chairman of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Industry Advisor to the Board, Toshiba Corporation, will present keynote addresses at the Tokyo Symposium. Mr Tsang and Shigetaka Sato, Chairman of the Osaka Chamber of Commerce, and Chairman of the Board, Keihan Electric Railway Co Ltd, will be among those delivering keynote addresses at the symposium in Osaka.

Spotlight on Asia
A number of thematic sessions will also take place, offering marketing intelligence and practical information for Japanese companies looking to do business in Asia, especially the mainland. Topics will include selling consumer brands and distributing creative content on the mainland, exploring partnership opportunities in environmental and manufacturing technology, setting up in the mainland’s Pearl River Delta, taxation and legal advice for doing business on the mainland, and opportunities arising from Hong Kong’s expanding renminbi business.

High-Profile Speakers
Prominent speakers taking part will include: Takehiko Nakao, Japan’s Vice Minister of Finance for International Affairs, Ministry of Finance; Tadashi Okamura, Chairman, Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Industry Advisor to the Board, Toshiba Corporation; Norman TL Chan, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority; Dr Jonathan Choi, Chairman of the Hong Kong-Japan Business Cooperation Committee; Song Zheng Huan, Chairman of the mainland’s Goodbaby Group; Fang Fang, JP Morgan’s Managing Director, Vice Chairman, Asia, and Chief Executive Officer, China, Investment Banking; and James E Thompson, Chairman and Chief Executive of Crown Worldwide Holdings Ltd.

Professional service providers from Hong Kong’s corporate, accounting, legal and logistics sectors will take part in the Tokyo and Osaka symposiums, offering free business consultation to Japanese participants. Two visiting Hong Kong delegations, covering health food and technology, will also attend the symposiums, offering additional networking opportunities for Japanese companies.

Hong Kong Dinner in Tokyo
HKTDC Executive Director Fred Lam will host a Hong Kong Dinner in Tokyo, 15 May, with Chief Executive Donald Tsang as keynote speaker. More than 500 business and political leaders from Hong Kong and Japan are expected to attend the gala evening.

Japanese Supporting Organisations
TGTHK is organised in association with the Japan External Trade Organisation and Small and Medium Enterprises and Regional Innovation, Japan. In addition, TGTHK welcomes the support of over 50 Japanese organisations, including the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Japan Association of Corporate Executives, Japan New Business Conferences, Osaka Prefectural Government, Kawasaki City, Kobe City, Kyoto City, the Kansai Economic Federation, the Kansai Association of Corporate Executives, and the Japan-China Economic Relations and Trade Centre.

Fourteen Hong Kong partners are lending their support to TGTHK: the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Tokyo), the Innovation and Technology Commission, InvestHK, the Information Services Department, the Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Ltd, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd, the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, the Hong Kong Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, the Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation, the Hong Kong Tourism Board, the Japan Society of Hong Kong, and the Law Society of Hong Kong.
