Speaking at a cocktail reception on August 25 organised by the Trade Development Council, Romanian President Ion Iliescu said the country will have a consulate in Hong Kong towards the end of the year. The President said Hong Kong is very significant to connect Romania economically with the mainland.

Romania is expected to join the European Union during the next enlargement round by 2007. In the first half of 2003, total exports of Hong Kong to Romania increased by 60% to HK$108 million.
