Strong Middle East Market Response to Style Hong Kong Expo in Dubai
Hong Kong Business Mission Visits Iran Following Dubai Show
22 December 2008 - Style Hong Kong Expo in Dubai, the largest showing of Hong Kong products in the Middle East, successfully concluded its fifth edition today at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
"We are pleased with the enthusiastic response from exhibitors and buyers," said Paul Yin, Council Member of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), which organises the annual Hong Kong product exhibition.
"This year's show is a considerable achievement considering the economic challenges faced by many companies as a result of the global credit crunch. The exhibition's turnout met our expectations," said Mr Yin.
Buyers from the United Arab Emirates and throughout the Middle East region visited the four-day fair to source the quality offerings of more than 200 Hong Kong companies.
The exhibition showcased consumer electronics and IT products, costume jewellery, clothing, environmental products, furniture and furnishings, handbags and leather goods, toys and games, lighting products, houseware, watches and clocks, sporting and travel goods, stationery, hotel supplies and construction materials.
This year's Style Hong Kong Expo in Dubai was inaugurated by HH Sheikh Hasher bin Maktoum Al Maktoum, Director General, Dubai Department of Information, together with Mr Yin and HKTDC Assistant Executive Director Benjamin Chau.
Immediately after the Dubai product expo, 13 Hong Kong companies, among them seven from the Dubai show, visited Iran to meet with senior business and governmental leaders. The mission, 19-22 December, was led by Dr David Wong, a HKTDC Council Member, and follows the HKTDC's pathfinding mission to Iran in 2005. The Hong Kong companies represented the houseware, consumer electronics and electrical appliances' industries, along with legal and consultancy services.
The Hong Kong mission members enjoyed market briefings, visits to Iranian retail establishments and government bodies and a tour of the Assalouyeh natural gas plant, one of the world's largest.
In Tehran, Dr Wong hosted a networking dinner, attended by more than 20 senior government officials and local business leaders. A seminar, "Hong Kong - Your Gateway to China," was also organised, with more than 200 local business people attending. Business matching was arranged as well, with more than 50 Iranian companies taking part.
A number of serious business
contacts were made as a result of the mission, and reciprocal Iranian missions
to Hong Kong are expected in the near future.
