Strong Hong Kong Presence at the Cannes Film Festival
Film Companies and Movie Stars Join the TDC at Cannes

May 11, 2007 - There will be a strong Hong Kong flavour at the Cannes Film Festival, which opens next week in Cannes, France. To help promote the Hong Kong film industry, Mr Henry Tang, Financial Secretary of the HKSAR, Mr Gilles Jacob, President of the Festival de Cannes and Mr Fred Lam, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (TDC), will attend the glamorous film festival.

They will officiate at the inauguration ceremony for the 60th Festival de Cannes Anniversary Exhibition, STARWAY, Allée de Stars, on May 18 at Carlton Beach. They will also attend the cocktail reception for the Hong Kong film industry, which follows the inauguration ceremony.

The photo exhibition STARWAY, Allée de Stars, celebrates 60 memorable years in the life of the Cannes Film Festival, including images of Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai and award-winning actress Maggie Cheung. Cheung is also one of the panel judges at Cannes this year.

Mr Jack So, Chairman of the new Hong Kong Film Development Council, along with council members Lam Kin-Ngok, Nansun Shi, Wilfred Wong, Bill Kong, John Sham and Crucindo Hung, will attend the cocktail reception.

Wong Kar-wai, director of My Blueberry Nights, which opens this year's Cannes Film Festival, will also attend the cocktail. Last year, Wong served as president of the jury, the first Chinese president in the festival's history.

Others expected at the cocktail include the co-directors of Triangle, Johnnie To, Tsui Hark and Ringo Lam, and the movie's stars Louis Koo, Simon Yam and Sun Hong-lei. Triangle, an official film selection at this year's festival, will be shown at the Midnight Screenings. Peter Chan, director of The Warlords and the movie's star Xu Jing Lei are also expected, as are Zhang Zheng and Shu Qi, who starred in this year's festival short movie.

Representatives of 14 Hong Kong film companies will take part in the festival this year. They are: Albert Lee of Emperor Motion Picture (HK) Ltd; Li Kuo Hsing of Mei Ah Entertainment Group; Siuming Tsui of Sundream Motion Pictures Ltd; Daneil Lam of Universe Films Distribution Co Ltd; others including representatives of Adda Audio Visual Ltd, ARMS Distribution, Celestial Pictures Ltd; Edko Films Ltd, Fortissimo Films, Fortune Star Entertainment (HK) Ltd, Golden Network Asia Ltd, Intercontinental Films Distribution Co Ltd, Media Asia Group and Mandarin Films Distribution Co Ltd.

Senior Services Promotion Manager of the TDC, Ms Sophia Chong, said that the TDC is promoting the Hong Kong film industry at Cannes in several ways. "We are helping Hong Kong film companies participate at Marché du Film, Cannes' annual film market. We have also organised the Hong Kong Pavilion at Village International," said Ms Chong. "This gives Hong Kong companies the opportunity to meet with overseas counterparts and build relations with the international media. And we are putting together a cocktail reception for the Hong Kong film industry to help promote Hong Kong films and celebrate the Cannes Film Festival's 60th anniversary."

Market screenings are being arranged to promote a number of Hong Kong movies at Cannes, including A Battle of Wits, Curiosity Kills the Cat, Eye in the Sky, Flash Point, Getting Home, The Haunted School, Invisible Target, The Postmodern Life of my Aunt, The Pye-Dog and Twins Mission.
