Mainland Blogger Han Han a Hit at Hong Kong Book Fair
New Media Sensation Speaks to HKTDC for Exclusive Webcast
26 July 2010 – Best-selling author and the Chinese mainland’s most popular blogger Han Han praised Hong Kong’s openness during his visit last week to the HKTDC Hong Kong Book Fair, and said he is considering launching a Hong Kong edition of Duchangtuan (Party), his hugely successful new magazine.
Hong Kong “is a place with openness and diversity,” Mr Han said in an exclusive interview for the webcast service of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC). Bringing his publication to Hong Kong is attractive, he said, because the city boasts “an open society and there are a wide variety of books.” The interview is available at www.youtube.com/hktdc. In addition, webcasts of seminars conducted by Mr Han and other authors during the fair can be viewed at http://hkbookfair.hktdc.com/en/News_FairNewsPage.aspx?id=2014.
Mr Han runs a blog that has registered more than 300 million hits, the largest following of a personal blog on the mainland. He was nominated for Time magazine’s “2010 Time 100 Poll,” and is the author of the best-selling novel Triple Door.
At a Book Fair seminar, Mr Han predicted that the Internet would remain a popular and powerful source of change on the Chinese mainland. “The Internet is relatively less restricted, because you can publish something first and later delete it if you feel it is not right. It can appear there for a while at least,” he said. “Nothing, including governments, has been destroyed by literature or by showing a picture. Literature and art are what make a nation prosper. My magazine hasn’t done that much yet, but I do hope it will have an impact.”
The 21st edition of the Book Fair, organised by the HKTDC, has included more than 250 cultural events under the theme “Reading the World, Writing the Future.” The event, which concludes tomorrow, has attracted a record number of exhibitors, as well as notable Chinese authors and an unprecedented number of English-language authors.
