Hong Kong to Host International Documentary Marketplace
Asian Side of the Doc Regional Debut Hosted at FILMART Starting Monday

18 March 2010 – Hong Kong is a logical choice for the debut of Asian Side of the Doc (ASD), a marketplace for international documentary film-makers, according to the organisers of the event to be held during Hong Kong International Film and TV Market (FILMART) starting Monday.

“We needed to link it to a media event, an entertainment event,” said Pierre-Yves Lochon, General Manager of SinapsesAsia, which helps link TV and film-makers from Europe with potential partners in Asia. “FILMART is one of the major events in Asia, so we decided to come to Asia first, to Hong Kong,” he said.

ASD is based on France’s Sunny Side of the Doc event – and sponsored by the European Union's Media International. The three-day programme in Hong Kong will feature a series of screenings, workshops and networking events and will involve about 150 executives from the world’s television, film and associated media industries.

FILMART is organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKDTC) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre 22-25 March.

Bright Future in Asia
In an interview for the HKTDC webcast service, Mr Lochon also said growing demand for the genre in Asia is fuelling efforts to produce more documentaries.

“There are some really strong trends in Asia which give us the impression that the market will be larger [and] will be an expanding market for documentaries,” he said. “The first, I think, is development of documentary channels in Asia, mainly American big brands like Discovery and National Geographic or British brands like BBC, and these brands, global brands, are expanding all over Asia, thanks to digital distribution.”

Filmart Screenings
FILMART, one of nine events that make up Entertainment Expo, is among the world’s top three events of its kind in terms of exhibitor numbers. FILMART is expected to attract more than 540 exhibitors from 29 countries and regions, and will feature more than 250 film screenings and 60 seminars and networking sessions.
