Hong Kong Labels Take Centre Stage

Hong Kong's garment industry has embarked on a challenging journey towards establishing a name for itself.

More and more clothing companies have been joining forces with talented local designers to make clothes that carry their own labels.

A selection of these creations will be displayed at the final round of the Hong Kong New Fashion Collection Award, organised by the Trade Development Council (TDC). This is one of the highlights of the upcoming Hong Kong Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2004 which will be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from July 8 -11, 2003.

Twelve collections have been chosen for final judging which will take place on July 8 to launch the prestigious four-day Fashion Week.

Mr Kenneth Fang, one of the judges of the contest, noted that clothing enterprises had given "tremendous" support to the designers to turn great ideas into highly marketable collections.

"It truly demonstrates a close collaboration between talented designers and clothing companies with production capability," Mr Fang said.

This year's contestants were given the option of entering Occasional Wear, or Day Wear collections in the contest, the third competition of its kind to be organised by the TDC.

The winners will be given awards for "Marketability", "Creativity" and "Best Application of Technology"*. There will also be an "Overall Winner Award".

The garment industry's new drive towards high value-added products is prompted by increasing competition from other countries.

Upgrading their designs and styles, and developing their own brand names is one route clothing manufacturers can take to stay competitive in the world clothing market.

Hong Kong, in recent years, has been producing exceptionally talented young designers whose creations have started to make a mark on the fashion world.

Hong Kong Fashion Week is the first big trade fair for the garment industry to be held in the HKSAR since the outbreak of Sars in March.
