February 14, 2007 - More than 500 international film professionals and media representatives attended a Hong Kong reception at Berlinale, the 57th Berlin International Film Festival, on February 13. The cocktail reception was organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) on behalf of Entertainment Expo Hong Kong.
The third Entertainment Expo Hong Kong officially opens March 20. The glittering, multi-media showcase will present the finest in Asian film, digital entertainment, music and TV in eight entertainment-related events, including Hong Kong International Film & TV Market (FILMART), the Hong Kong International Film Festival and the Hong Kong Film Awards.
Speaking at the Berlinale reception, guest of honour Mr Joseph Wong, Hong Kong's Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology, also introduced the first Asian Film Awards. The inaugural Asian Film Awards presentation will be staged March 20 in Hong Kong, alongside the gala opening of Entertainment Expo Hong Kong.
Mr Wong invited international film companies to partner with Hong Kong. Mr Wong said Hong Kong's Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) with the Chinese mainland had opened up new opportunities for the Hong Kong film industry and its partners.
"There were 14 Hong Kong-mainland co-productions in 2006," said Mr Wong, "including box office successes Banquet and Curse of the Golden Flower, which took in US$17.7 million and US$39 million respectively in China and Hong Kong." Mr Wong told the international gathering that he also "welcomed overseas film producers to shoot in Hong Kong."
Also speaking at the reception was Mr Alan Wong, the HKTDC's deputy executive director. Mr Wong noted that Entertainment Expo's FILMART this year would include Locations World, a pavilion dedicated to helping filmmakers find ideal shooting locations worldwide.
TV World is another new addition to FILMART, which has attracted 450 exhibitors from more than 30 countries.
Berlinale jury member Ms Nansun Shi and mainland film director Zhang Yang were among those who attended the Hong Kong reception.
