Hong Kong Film Industry Back on Track: Jack So
Film Development Council Chief Notes Popularity of
Hong Kong Films and Co-productions with the Mainland

25 February 2010 – Hong Kong movies have staged an impressive recovery in the past few years, and the local industry is well-positioned to realise co-production opportunities on the Chinese mainland, according to Jack So, Chairman of the Hong Kong Film Development Council.

Mr So, who is also Chairman of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the organiser of the Hong Kong International Film and Television Market (FILMART), 22-25 March, said the number of Hong Kong movies being made is increasing, and that these movies are a hit with audiences on the Chinese mainland.

“The number of Hong Kong movies made starting in 2009 was 30 per cent more than the [Hong Kong] movies made in 2008,” said Mr So. He noted that 70 Hong Kong movies were made in 2009, that a further increase is expected in 2010 and that the mainland has become a growing market for Hong Kong movies and co-productions with overseas companies.

“China is now proving to be a fast-growing market for Chinese-language movies,” said Mr So, adding that Hong Kong movies, including co-productions, have become very popular in the Chinese market. “At least six or seven of the top 10 box office hits are Hong Kong movies or co-productions, so this really has given a tremendous boost to the industry in Hong Kong.”
