Jointly presented by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (TDC) and organisers of entertainment-related events, the month-long Entertainment Expo (March 20 - April 19) in Hong Kong will showcase the development of Hong Kong's entertainment industry and helps propel the growth of creative industries.

First organised in 2005, Entertainment Expo brings together eight leading fixtures in Hong Kong's entertainment calendar, including film, digital entertainment, music and TV productions. The inaugural 2005 edition has drawn overwhelming response.

A number of new records were achieved last year, one of which was the biggest-ever box office receipt of the Hong Kong International Film Festival. The turnout at the Hong Kong Film Awards presentation ceremony was also a record high, thanks to the relocation to a bigger venue, the Hong Kong Coliseum. Over 2,800 buyers attended the FILMART, also a record high, while HAF attracted impressive turnouts of quality production projects and prospective investors. The number of entries at the Hong Kong Independent Short Film & Video Awards was also the largest-ever. In short, all of the eight events were very successful in 2005.

This year, the 2nd edition of the event will run from 20 March to 19 April 2006. Top-notch industry professionals from around the world will converge at Asia's world city to present a glitzy "Hong Kong Entertainment Month".

The Expo will encompass eight leading entertainment events, including the three founding events of Hong Kong International Film & TV Market (FILMART), Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) and Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA); as well as five core events, namely Hong Kong - Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF), Hong Kong Digital Entertainment Excellence Awards (DEEA), IFPI Hong Kong Top Sales Music Award (IFPI), Digital Entertainment Leadership Forum (DELF), and Hong Kong Independent Short Film & Video Awards (ifva).

The Opening Ceremony of Entertainment Expo and the Gala Evening of the 25th Hong Kong Film Awards will take place concurrently at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 20 March. The evening will also celebrate the special anniversaries of the three founding events, namely the 10th Hong Kong International Film & TV Market, the 25th Hong Kong Film Awards, and the 30th Hong Kong International Film Festival.

Speaking at a press conference today (21 February), TDC's Assistant Executive Director Raymond Yip said Entertainment Expo provides a platform for creative talents and traders in the region.

"With the growing trend towards media convergence, Hong Kong is well poised to further sharpen its edge in content production and marketing. Hong Kong can offer contents to both traditional and new media such as computer game, online game, mobile phone, film, TV and music," he added.

To capitalise on the media convergence trend, TDC and IFPI will jointly present the Hong Kong Music Fair, to run concurrently with the 10th FILMART. The pavilion will serve as a new platform for industry professionals to explore opportunities in music copyright transaction and business partnership. The 40 exhibitors at the pavilion will promote their music works to producers from the Chinese mainland and overseas.

"CD release used to be the only channel for publishing original music works and royalty fee was a relatively straightforward matter. However, with the advent of new media, industry professionals require greater support in terms of professional services to handle matters not directly related to the creative aspect," Mr. Yip said.

More than 400 exhibitors from 20 countries and regions will participate in FILMART this year. The exhibitor number represents a 15% increase over 2005. The two highlights of FILMART, "Digital Entertainment Pavilion" and "Audio-visual Equipment and Post-production Services Pavilion" will offer overseas buyers a wide array of choices and services.

Furthermore, TDC will provide business matching services to help industry professionals find potential business partners during the Expo, while one-stop consultation services will offer customised consultation on film production, marketing, licensing and legal matters.

To run concurrently with FLIMART, the Hong Kong - Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) serves as a financing platform for the film industry. As co-organisers, TDC and the Hong Kong, Kowloon & New Territories Motion Picture Association Ltd. (MPIA) have selected 25 Asian film productions from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Chinese mainland, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Iran, to be presented at HAF. HAF will help these Asian film productions seek financing and business cooperation opportunities in the form of co-production, joint venture or investment. For details, please visit the fair website of HAF: www. haf.eexpohk.com.

Last year, HAF has successfully raised capital for a number of movies, including some that have already been completed or released such as "Invisible Waves", directed by Pen-ek Ratanaruang of Thailand, and "McDull The Alumni", directed by Samson Chiu Leung Chun and produced by Peter Chan Ho Sun and Brian Tse Lap Man of Hong Kong. "Invisible Waves" has been nominated for the Golden Bear Award at the Berlin International Film Festival.
