HKTDC and Google Join Forces to Enhance Trade
Tech Partnership to Connect Hong Kong SMEs with Global Buyers

4 January 2013 – The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and Google today announced a joint partnership to use innovative technology in business-to-business (B2B) trade.

Fashion Extravaganza Live
To highlight the partnership, the HKTDC will present Hong Kong Fashion Extravaganza live on Google+ Hangouts On Air, making the annual highlight of World Boutique, Hong Kong accessible to traders all over the world. Each January, the HKTDC organises World Boutique, Hong Kong, and Hong Kong Fashion Week for Fall/Winter, Asia’s largest fashion event. Together, the two fairs attract top fashion designers, brands and suppliers from all over the world. Fashion Extravaganza, a gala evening presentation, spotlights select designers from Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and around the world.

Hong Kong’s Internet economy is forecast to grow by seven per cent a year, reaching HK$146 billion by 2015, and B2B e-commerce is expected to be one of the key drivers of this growth. By embracing Google+ and other innovative platforms, the HKTDC will help connect SMEs to the online global business community.

Innovative Connections
"The HKTDC has always been a forerunner in using new technology to connect Hong Kong’s SMEs with buyers worldwide,” said Sophia Chong, Director of the HKTDC’s Publications & E-Commerce. “We pioneered the world's first B2B sourcing app for Android and Apple mobile platforms in 2009.” In 2011, the HKTDC created a Product Magazines App. Featuring the HKTDC’s 15 product publications, it has attracted 100,000 downloads from buyers worldwide to date. The same year, the HKTDC applied QR codes to connect buyers with exhibitors at its exhibitions.

The partnership with Google, Ms Chong added, reinforces the HKTDC’s mission to make trading easier, particularly for lifestyle products and services. “We look forward to introducing more innovative ways to enable trade and create opportunities for SMEs.”

Bridging Buyers and Sellers
"The Google-HKTDC partnership is a landmark collaboration using technology to enable new trade opportunities and foster deeper relations with customers,” said John Liu, Corporate Vice President, Head of Greater China, Google. “Working with the HKTDC to stream the Hong Kong Fashion Extravaganza live on Google+ Hangouts On Air is just the tip of the iceberg. With our comprehensive suite of solutions, Google helps bridge buyers and sellers through continuous innovations.” Google has also worked with partners in Thailand, Singapore and New York to promote fashion and boost various textile brands. In September 2012, the HKTDC launched its own Google+ page, which features the latest trade information for buyers and sellers.

HKTDC Google+ page followers can win a Galaxy Note II by watching the live streaming of Hong Kong Fashion Extravaganza, which takes place at 7pm on 14 January, via Google+.
