HKTDC Design Gallery Launches New Retail Channel on Taobao
Online Shop to Promote Hong Kong Brands on Mainland Market
hongkongdg.taobao.com, to promote Hong Kong brands and designer collections on the Chinese mainland.
“Online shopping hits the whole world, especially the Chinese mainland,” said Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) Deputy Executive Director Margaret Fong at the online shop’s opening ceremony today at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC).
Targeting the Mainland
“The transaction value of online shopping on the mainland is estimated to be growing by more than 80 per cent a year, reaching Rmb250billion last year. This presents immense business opportunities for Hong Kong companies.”
Ms Fong added that online shopping can be done anytime and anywhere, making it particularly popular with young people. And suppliers can promote their latest products to consumers more quickly, saving time and resources. By putting goods on the online shop, said Ms Fong, companies can also get quick feedback on their latest products from online consumers. “We believe this will be an effective strategy, helping Hong Kong companies capture a piece of the lucrative mainland market.”
“The Hong Kong Trade Development Council has long been a strong advocate for Hong Kong’s export trade, while Taobao’s primary mission is to offer quality net products to consumers and provide businesses with a low-cost, high-efficiency sales channel,” said Daniel Zhang, CFO of Taobao and General Manager of Taobao Mall.
“I believe the new HKTDC channel on Taobao Mall, which is dedicated to business-to-consumer retail on Taobao, will help Hong Kong brands and small businesses expand into the mainland Chinese e-commerce market. At the same time, it will allow more Chinese mainland consumers to purchase Hong Kong products with greater ease and convenience,” said Mr Zhang.
More than 50 Brands
The online shop is selling 100 per cent Hong Kong designs, ranging from fashion and accessories and jewellery and watches, to homeware and lifestyle goods, gifts and stationery, as well as Hong Kong designer collections. More than 50 brands are now available on the online shop. In addition, Hong Kong artist Andy Lau and designer Prudence Mak are working with the Design Gallery online shop to create exclusive gifts for online shoppers under their brands ANDOX and BOX and Chocolate Rain respectively.
Today’s opening ceremony featured a mini-parade showcasing some of the products available on the online shop. Mr Lau’s cartoon characters, ANDOX and BOX, performed a kung fung dance, while the new HKTDC Design Gallery theme song, created by Hong Kong rapper MC Jin, was played.
The new website also features the latest news on product trends, events and interviews with Hong Kong designers. Some of the information is contributed by www.style-tips.com, www.fashion.com.hk and East Touch weekly magazine.
