Food, Tea, Chinese Medicine Fairs Open in Mid-August
Food Expo to Spotlight Japan, Fair’s First Partner Country

1 August 2012 – More than 1,400 exhibitors from all over the world are expected to take part in three Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) fairs this month. 

The HKTDC Food Expo, the HKTDC Hong Kong International Tea Fair and the International Conference & Exhibition of the Modernization of Chinese Medicine & Health Products (ICMCM) will open 16 August at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.  

Food Fair Record
The 23rd edition of Food Expo (16-20 August) will host more than 1,000 exhibitors from 26 countries and regions, a new fair record. They include first-time participants from France, Greece and Lithuania. Japan, the fair’s first Partner Country, will organise the largest-ever pavilion, featuring more than 220 exhibitors. Special events such as a cocktail reception, gala dinner, cooking demonstrations, sake seminars and Japanese food presentations will promote Japan’s food trade and encourage cultural exchanges between the country and Hong Kong. Apart from Japan, there will be pavilions representing Brunei, the Chinese mainland, Iran, Korea, Mexico, the Philippines and the United States. 

The Trade Hall will be dedicated to trade for the first two days, opening to public visitors on 18 August. Consumers will also find a world of food offerings in the Public Hall, open daily during the expo. The Premium Food Zone in Hall 1 will showcase more than 30 brands of food and beverage products. 

Gourmet Themes
The Gourmet Zone will return following its successful 2011 debut. This year’s expanded area will feature more than 70 exhibitors under four themes: Sweet Delight, Chic & More, World Cuisine and Fine Dining, with such offerings as top-quality chocolate, wine, coffee and seafood. Open both to trade buyers and consumers 17-19 August, the zone will also feature cooking demonstrations by noted chefs.

Consumers will want to check out the Night Bazaar, 16-19 August, where price discounts of 50 per cent or more will be offered each evening.

Other events to be held at the Public Hall include the presentation of a new Wan Chai food map, a junior chef competition, a “Yuan Yang” Competition, food safety and nutrition seminars, and lucky draws.

Tea Time
The HKTDC Hong Kong International Tea Fair will return with close to 300 exhibitors from 12 countries and regions, including first-time exhibitor Iran. Organised by the HKTDC and the Chinese Tea Culture International Exchange Association, the fair runs 16-18 August, with the first two days set aside exclusively for traders.

Dedicated zones this year are Friends of Tea, offering bakery products and confectionery items, Tea Ware and Branding and Design Services.

Milk Tea Championship
Fair highlights include the International KamCha Competition, with regional winners from Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Melbourne, Shenzhen and Toronto competing to brew the best version of the unique, Hong Kong-style milk tea drink. Results of the Tea Competition will be announced at the Tea Reception on the opening day, while the winning tea will be available to patrons for free tasting at selected hotels and restaurants after the fair.

At the International Tea Industry Conference, global experts will share the latest trends in the Chinese and Western tea markets, and offer brand-building success stories. A seminar on innovative marketing of tea is also scheduled. Other highlights include tea-tasting sessions, a workshop on pairing tea with food, and activities and performances showcasing tea art and culture.

Wellness Wonders
The ICMCM, 16-18 August, will feature more than 110 exhibitors from eight countries and regions. Jointly organised by the HKTDC and the Modernized Chinese Medicine International Association, the event is restricted to trade visitors for the first two days.

Fair highlights include a two-day ICMCM conference under the theme “Chinese Herbal Medicine for Major Disease Burden and Health Promotion,” and the International Postgraduate Symposium on Chinese Medicine. A variety of other forums will also be held during the fair.

Focus on Dieting
The fair will open to the public on 18 August, with a public forum on Chinese medicine, along with an educational display spotlighting Lingnan medicine, and diet demonstrations offered by Chinese medicine practitioners.
