27 June 2009 – The first Design Gallery in the Chinese mainland opened today at The Malls at Oriental Plaza in Beijing. Established by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the shop promotes products designed in Hong Kong and features the latest collections from more than 40 quality brands and designers.

The HKTDC Design Gallery in Beijing offers a wide variety of jewellery, watches, fashion accessories, creative houseware, gifts and other products meant to enrich city life with creativity and innovation.

"The HKTDC Design Gallery serves as a window to showcase creative collections by Hong Kong designers and brands," said Benjamin Chau, Assistant Executive Director of the HKTDC.

"The opening of the first Design Gallery on the Chinese mainland will help Hong Kong brands and designers explore the highly promising market on the Chinese mainland," Mr Chau said, adding that the new shop also brings Hong Kong products to Beijing's fashion-conscious consumers.

"Beijing is the capital of China as well as its economic centre. The city is the perfect place to launch the first Design Gallery on the Chinese mainland. People in Beijing possess strong consumption power, and middle-class consumers are keen to pursue high-quality products with unique designs to show their distinguished taste. Design Gallery's collections from Hong Kong brands and designers should meet those demands."

The Design Gallery is located at Shop AA16, on level 1 of The Malls at Oriental Plaza, one of Beijing's most popular shopping centres. With 120 square metres of floor space, the elegantly decorated outlet displays products in various zones and with a relaxed atmosphere.

HKTDC Executive Director Fred Lam presided over a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the soft opening. The event was followed by a product parade featuring Design Gallery items; showcases have also been set up at Wonderful World in Zone 1 of Oriental Plaza to promote some of the brands at the shop.

As a token of appreciation, customers will receive a membership card for every purchase of at least Rmb800. The cards, offered until 12 July, will provide customers with a 10 per cent discount for the coming year. The HKTDC opened the original Design Gallery in 1991, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. A second Design Gallery was opened in 2007 at the Hong Kong International Airport's departure hall.
