Consumer Electronics Sales up Amid Reviving Economy
Buyer Attendance at Electronics Fair Reaches Record High This Year
19 April 2010 – The seventh edition of the HKTDC Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Spring Edition) attracted more than 55,000 buyers during its four-day run, 13-16 April, with overseas buyers up 20 per cent, a new fair record. Buyers from Brazil, India, Russia and Vietnam were up 60 per cent, while those from traditional markets, including Australia, Britain, France, Japan, Italy, Korea and the United States, reached double-digit growth.
“Attendance at the fair was strong, and many exhibitors took orders,” said Professor KB Chan, Chairman of the HKTDC Electronics/Electrical Appliances Industries Advisory Committee. “Sales of LCD TVs, security systems and LED lighting products did particularly well.”
Fair highlights included a wide range of 3D display technology, showcasing the latest generation of 3D TVs and projection gear. The HKTDC also held seminars on the topic, with leading industry experts discussing the latest product developments and applications.
Global Retail Giants
To help boost exhibitor business, the HKTDC arranged nearly 200 trade delegations from global retail giants. They included Australia’s 100% Stores NZ, the US’s Best Buy, Canada’s Hudson's Bay, Chile’s Tecnoglobal S.A, the Chinese mainland’s Suning Appliance and China Resources Vanguard, France’s Carrefour, Germany’s MGB Metro, Japan’s Sony and JVC, Russia’s Radiozavod Popova and Rissa, Spain’s El Corte Ingles and Britain’s Halfords.
“There are a great variety of products here,” said Manoj Kumar, CEO for CD & E, Home Solutions Retail (India) Ltd. “Last year we placed orders worth around US$3 million, and it is likely that we will double the amount this year, thanks to the improvement in the economy.
"I have been visiting this fair for many years – the sourcing here is good, and the quality of the products on display is better than at other shows,” said J Chris Rohde, a British buyer for Hearing Products International Ltd. “My company specialises in products for the disabled, especially the hard of hearing and visually impaired, such as induction loop systems and flashing light systems. My goal here is to meet with my existing suppliers and see what is new. I've already found many new ideas," he added.
The concurrent HKTDC Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Spring Edition) attracted more than 22,000 buyers, a jump of 40 per cent over last year’s inaugural edition.
