February 25, 2008 - Film, television, music and digital entertainment enjoyed a bright spotlight at today's press conference for the 4th Entertainment Expo Hong Kong, which takes place March 17 to April 13. Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Frederick Ma and Hong Kong Entertainment Ambassador Tony Leung, along with top entertainment industry representatives, presided over the press conference.

This year's Entertainment Expo includes its three founding events - the Hong Kong International Film and Television Market (FILMART), the Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) and the Hong Kong Film Awards Presentation Ceremony (HKFA) - along with six core events: the Asian Film Awards (AFA); the Hong Kong - Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF); the Hong Kong Music Fair (HKMF); the IFPI Hong Kong Top Sales Music Award (IFPI TSA); the Digital Entertainment Leadership Forum (DELF); and the Hong Kong Independent Short Film and Video Awards (ifva).

Speaking at today's press conference, Mr Ma said he is confident that Entertainment Expo will enhance Hong Kong's status as Asia's entertainment hub. "Staging such large-scale industry events attracts practitioners from overseas and the mainland and helps develop Hong Kong into a regional business hub for the creative industries."

Mr Leung, back for the fourth year in a row as Hong Kong Entertainment Ambassador, was full of praise for the mega event. "Entertainment Expo has become Asia's must-attend entertainment industry gathering - for Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland, the rest of Asia and beyond. Every year, it attracts international distributors, investors, media and, of course, film and TV stars, directors, producers and other key industry professionals. I feel very proud to be involved and hope everybody will 'get into the scene', too."

Among Entertainment Expo's nine events, five focus on film and TV: FILMART, HKIFF, HAF and AFA all open on March 17, while the Hong Kong Film Awards Presentation Ceremony, which takes place April 13, concludes the 4th Entertainment Expo.

FILMART, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (TDC) has attracted more than 480 exhibitors from 30 countries and regions this year. The 12th FILMART will feature four special pavilions - Animation and Digital Entertainment World, Equipment and Post-production Services World, Locations World - Asia, and TV World.

Benjamin Chau, Assistant Executive Director of the TDC, said: "We are expanding FILMART'S TV programming this year, adding TV World Screening to promote local TV dramas and documentaries."

The HKIFF this year will feature nearly 300 motion pictures from around the world, while HAF, the annual film project market, will focus on 25 films seeking financing and co-production partners. The AFA, in its second gala year, and the HKFA, which turns 27 this year, honour excellence in the Asian and Hong Kong film industries respectively.

Turning to music, both the HKMF and the IFPI TSA will take place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. New to the HKMF this year is the Talent Showcase, giving singers and composers the chance to be discovered by industry professionals. With support from Hong Kong Cyberport, HKMF visitors are free to download segments of the IFPI ceremony from March 20 to March 21.

The theme of DELF 2008 is "Immersive Media: What's Next in Creative Digital Content - 3D Cinema." The Chief Director and Creative Director of Fuwa, the animated promotional film for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, will take part in the forum, along with other top industry innovators.

The 13th Hong Kong Independent Short Film and Video Awards (ifva) festival will screen the films of finalists in the Open, Youth, Animation and Asian New Force categories. Outstanding work in the Single-Screen-Based Interactive Media category will also be shown. Another ifva highlight will be the live performance by electronic music creator Ho Shan@PixelToy and Japanese new media artist Daito Manabe.

A number of major industry representatives attended today's press conference, including: Raymond Chow, Chairman of the TDC's Entertainment Advisory Committee; Fred Lam, Executive Director of the TDC; Wilfred Wong, Chairman of the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society Ltd; Gordon Chan, Chairman of the Hong Kong Film Awards Association; Ng Yu, Chairman of the Hong Kong Music Fair Organising Committee; Hung Tik, Chairman of IFPI (HK Group) Ltd; Nicholas Yang, Chief Executive Officer of Cyberport; and Connie Lam, Programme Director of the Hong Kong Arts Centre.
